Wood Slab
Made Into a Coffee Table
I pulled this one out
of the archives. 30 years refinishing furniture, and this is still the
only wood slab I have ever finished. I had to really think outside the box on a
way to level the surface and prepare it for finishing.

Above: Here is
the very large wood slab a customer asked me to sand and finish for use as a coffee table.
I like unique projects, so this job was a
lot of fun!

Above....Sanding
would have taken too long, so I
made a special jig and used the router instead.
I attached the jig in
the center of the table so it would spin 360 degrees.

Above...After I finished
resurfacing with the router, it's obvious how much I had to remove to get a flat surface!

Above....I then sanded the surface
of the wood slab smooth for
finishing using hand sanders. I sanded the slab first with a belt sander, then
followed it up with finer grits on the orbital.

Above...The large wood slab is finished and ready for delivery.
There are a lot of finishes you can use for the top, but I stuck with catalyzed
lacquer and buffed to a high sheen.
